There are a lot of misconceptions about dementia and care homes. People tend to think that a
dementia diagnosis means becoming an empty shell of one’s previous self, incapable of
performing anything meaningful. To outsiders, care homes are oftentimes seen as prisons for
the mentally ill, and there is a lot of stigma surrounding them.
This report describes the research, process, and results, respectively analysed, used, and
obtained while developing a toolkit for dementia awareness. This toolkit is intended to inform
the general public about the continued abilities of individuals with dementia, while aiming to
improve the respect for and understanding of people with dementia.
To design this toolkit, we went through several ideation and prototyping phases, including a
pressure cooker, Crazy 8 ideation method, and co-creation sessions.
The result is a toolkit that uses co-creation sessions with individuals with dementia to create art
pieces to display along a route near the care home. These artworks will be accompanied by a
personal story and are informative to anyone who comes across them.
In the report, we further show iterations on the prototype and discuss what areas of expertise
the project touches upon. We also provide guidelines on how co-creation sessions can be
planned and performed, and how routes can be planned around neighbourhoods.
In the discussion and conclusion, we reflect on the results and our teamwork and discuss what
we believe could have gone better in teamwork and planning.
